551 Horai Namba Honten 551蓬莱 本店
Osaka's favourite pork bun: the big, juicy butaman sold hot from steamers by the dozen at the Ebisubashi-suji main store, with a restaurant upstairs.
Restaurant meal: ¥1,500
About
Founded in 1945, 551 Horai is so tied to Osaka identity that '551 ga aru toki' (when there is 551) is a TV catchphrase. The main shop on Ebisubashi-suji has a glass window where staff fold buns at astonishing speed, a takeaway counter selling butaman, shumai and gyoza, and a Chinese restaurant upstairs. The butaman are big, slightly sweet and packed with pork and onion; Osakans carry boxes home on the train, which is why the smell is unmistakable. Branches in stations and department stores sell the same buns.
