About

Toei's Kyoto studio has produced jidaigeki, Japan's period dramas, since the 1920s, and the Toei Uzumasa Eigamura theme park opened in 1975 on part of its lot. For its 50th anniversary it was renamed Uzumasa Kyoto Village and reopened on 28 March 2026 after the first phase of a three-year renewal, repositioned as an immersive park for adults with the concept of "wandering into Edo-period Kyoto". Its streets of Edo-era townhouses, a Yoshiwara-style pleasure quarter and the Meiji-era streetscape are still used for filming, and actors in samurai costume roam and perform sword fights; there are ninja shows, a haunted house, costume rental for dressing as a samurai, geisha or ninja, and an adults-only immersive attraction. A night-time ticket offers evening events. More dining, a pleasure-quarter zone and a kabuki playhouse are planned for 2027 and 2028.
