Tatsumi Bridge and Gion Shirakawa 巽橋・祇園白川
A small bridge over the willow-lined Shirakawa canal in Gion, with old teahouses on the water and stone-paved Shinbashi-dori: Kyoto's most romantic evening walk.
About
The Shirakawa, a narrow stream flowing through the north of Gion, is lined with willows and cherry trees, and with ochaya and restaurants whose balconies overhang the water. The little Tatsumi-bashi bridge and the Tatsumi Daimyojin shrine beside it form the classic scene, especially in early April when the cherries bloom and are lit up at night, and the Shinbashi-dori stone street nearby is a designated Preservation District. Geiko and maiko pass here on their way to appointments in the evening. The area is also popular for wedding and kimono photos.
