Sushizen is a modest family shop on Sanjo-dori near Shinmachi, open only on weekdays in the daytime, that has been serving Kyoto office workers and Gion Festival neighbours since 1939. The signature is kaisen chirashi: a lacquer box of seasoned rice under sashimi, shrimp, egg and a glossy homemade sweet sauce, received with a clear soup. It earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand and is the kind of place where lunch takes 30 minutes and costs under 2,500 yen. It closes when the days fish runs out.
