About

Shogunzuka is a mound on the summit of Kachozan in the Higashiyama hills where, legend says, Emperor Kanmu buried a clay general in armour to protect the new capital in 794. It belongs to Shoren-in, which in 2014 moved a large hall here, the Seiryuden, to house its National Treasure Ao Fudo (Blue Fudo) painting, one of Japan's three great Fudo paintings, displayed as a replica except during special openings. Its main attraction is a wooden observation stage about 4.6 times larger than Kiyomizu-dera's, overlooking the city from Kyoto Station to the northern mountains. Spring and autumn evening illuminations make it one of Kyoto's best night views. The grounds also have a viewing platform on the west side and maple-filled gardens.
