Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street 嵯峨鳥居本 町並み
A protected village street at the far end of Arashiyama, where thatched and tiled farmhouses climb toward the vermilion torii of Atago Shrine and two centuries-old teahouses.
About
Saga-Toriimoto is a nationally designated preservation district along the old pilgrim road to Mount Atago. The lower part has merchant townhouses, the upper part thatched farmhouses; the classic frame is at the top, where the thatched Hiranoya and Tsutaya teahouses sit beside the Atago torii and the road disappears into the forest. Autumn maples turn the scene red, and early morning or late afternoon light rakes nicely along the slope with few people around.
Highlights
- Thatched teahouses beside the Atago Shrine torii
- Nationally protected townscape
- Maple colour in late November
- Peaceful compared with central Arashiyama
Tips
- Combine with Adashino Nenbutsu-ji, a few minutes' walk down the street.
- Most houses are private homes: stay on the road.
- Buses are infrequent; walking from Saga-Arashiyama takes about 30 minutes.
