About

Ryoan-ji is a Rinzai Zen temple founded in 1450 and rebuilt after the Onin War; its karesansui garden, laid out around 1500 by an unknown designer, is the purest expression of the Zen dry landscape. Fifteen moss-ringed stones in five groups sit on a 25 m long bed of white gravel enclosed by a low earthen wall whose oil-stained surface has weathered into soft abstract patterns. Interpretations range from a tigress leading cubs across a river to islands in a sea, and the temple encourages you simply to sit and look. Behind the hojo is the tsukubai stone water basin inscribed with four characters that read "I only know contentment", a replica of the original. The rest of the grounds are a large stroll garden around Kyoyochi pond, once famous for mandarin ducks, with a cherry-shaded path and the Seigen-in subtemple. Admission rose by 100 yen in 2023.
