Kurama Onsen くらま温泉
A mountain hot spring at the end of the Eizan Railway in Kurama, reopened in November 2024 after a long closure, with an outdoor rotenburo among cedars and maples. The classic finish to the Kurama-Kibune hike.
Day bath (indoor and outdoor): ¥2,500
About
Kurama Onsen sits in the forested valley above Kurama village, 10 minutes' walk (or a free shuttle) from Kurama Station. Its outdoor bath, surrounded by cedar and maple and snow in winter, is one of the few real mountain onsen within Kyoto city limits. The complex closed in 2021 and underwent a major renovation before reopening in November 2024, with refreshed outdoor and indoor baths, a sauna and a cold plunge, and an inn for overnight stays. Day visitors can choose the outdoor bath alone or the full indoor-outdoor set. Pair it with the hike over the mountain from Kibune via Kurama-dera, and take the Eizan Railway back through the Momiji Tunnel.
