Kiyomizu-dera from the Koyasu Pagoda 子安塔からの清水寺
The small vermilion pagoda on the far side of the Otowa valley gives the best side-on view of Kiyomizu-dera's wooden stage and main hall rising out of the trees.
About
Most visitors photograph the stage from the Okunoin viewing area; walk on past the Otowa waterfall and climb to the three-storey Koyasu Pagoda on the southern slope for a wider, quieter frame of the main hall and stage across the valley. The path is much less crowded and the extra distance lets you include the maple canopy below the stage. Afternoon light falls on the front of the hall; autumn and cherry season are spectacular.
Highlights
- Side-on view of the Kiyomizu stage and main hall
- Maple and cherry canopy below the stage
- Vermilion Koyasu Pagoda itself as a subject
- Fewer people than the Okunoin viewpoint
Tips
- The main hall and stage area require temple admission; check the current fee at the gate.
- A short telephoto (70 to 200 mm) helps fill the frame from across the valley.
- Be on the path by opening time in autumn to beat the crowds.
