About
Jakko-in is a Tendai nunnery on the western side of the Ohara valley, on the opposite side from Sanzen-in. It is best known as the retreat of Kenreimon-in, the empress who survived the Heike clan's defeat in 1185. The main hall was rebuilt after a fire in 2000, and the garden and approach steps are framed by maples. It is a quieter half-day add-on to Sanzen-in.
Highlights
- Rebuilt main hall and pond garden
- Associations with the Tale of the Heike
- Village walk from the Ohara bus stop
Tips
- Combine with Sanzen-in and Hosen-in on the other side of the valley
- Buses from Kyoto Station take about an hour
