Imobo Hiranoya Honke いもぼう平野家本家
Restaurant in Maruyama Park serving imobo, a Kyoto dish of shrimp-shaped taro and dried cod, devised by its founder about 300 years ago.
About
Hiranoya's founder, Hirano Gondayu, served the imperial-prince abbots of Shoren-in temple. According to the family, he grew a taro brought back from Kyushu, which became known as ebi-imo for its curved, striped shape, and cooked it with bodara, dried cod carried in from the north. The slow-simmered pair, imobo, became the shop's speciality and a Kyoto dish in its own right. The restaurant has stood beside Chion-in temple in Maruyama Park for about three hundred years. Set meals of imobo, rice and side dishes are served in tatami rooms.
