About
From 1703 until after World War II this block opposite Nijo Castle was the Kyoto home of the Kitamitsui family, the main line of the Mitsui merchant dynasty. Mitsui Fudosan opened its flagship hotel here in November 2020. Visitors enter through the Kajii-gate (Kajiimiya Gate), a historic gate dating to 1703 that was moved here and restored, and pass into a lobby designed by Andre Fu that opens onto a central garden by Shunsaku Miyagi, with flowing water, maples and stone. The spa, Thermal Spring Spa, draws natural hot spring water from deep below the hotel. The architecture by Kajima keeps the building low and quiet, matching the castle's moats across the street. Non-guests can book the Toki restaurant or have afternoon tea, which is the way to see the garden.
