Hisago (Gion) ひさご
A homely noodle-and-rice shop below Kodaiji famous for oyakodon so soft it trembles, with Kyoto's prized Kujo green onion and sansho pepper. A Michelin Bib Gourmand favourite.
About
Hisago has been serving Gion and Higashiyama for decades from a simple wooden shop on Shimogawara-dori. The star is oyakodon, chicken simmered in a sweet-savoury dashi and finished with barely set egg over rice, sprinkled with sansho. The udon and soba, especially kitsune and curry udon, are also excellent, and prices are very fair for this area. Because it sits on the main walking route between Yasaka Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera, there is usually a queue at lunchtime.
