About

Hiiragiya began in 1818 as a lodging for samurai and merchants and has been run by the same family for six generations. Nobel laureate Yasunari Kawabata was a regular guest and left a calligraphy praising it. The old wing keeps Meiji and Taisho period rooms with antique fittings, hinoki baths and small gardens, while the 2006 new wing, designed for the inn, uses sukiya techniques with modern comfort. Facing Tawaraya across Fuyacho-dori, it forms the most famous ryokan corner in Kyoto. Unlike Tawaraya, it has an English website and bookings are more accessible, making it a realistic way to experience a classic Kyoto inn.
