About
Shakusui-en is a pond garden dating back to the late Heian period, once part of the estate of Taira no Shigemori, near Sanjusangendo and Myoho-in. The Four Seasons, which opened in 2016, was built around it, with full-height glass lounges looking onto the pond, its stone bridge and the surrounding maples and cherries. The design is quietly modern, with timber, stone and a long lobby leading to the water. The garden is accessible, and the tea house Shakusui-tei on the pond serves matcha and seasonal sweets. In autumn the maples around the pond are some of the least crowded in eastern Kyoto. The Brasserie and Sushi Wakon offer more formal ways to visit.
