About

Opened in June 2020, Ace Hotel Kyoto anchors the redeveloped Shinpuhkan complex at Karasuma-Oike. The site's historic heart is the brick Kyoto Central Telephone Office designed in 1926 by Tetsuro Yoshida, whose arched facade is preserved on Aneyakoji-dori. Kengo Kuma added a new wing clad in timber louvres and ironwork, and Commune Design filled the interiors with Japanese and Californian crafts: indigo textiles, Kyoto ceramics, mingei furniture and works by local artists. The double-height lobby, with its long bar and Stumptown Coffee counter, is a free and lively place to sit. Restaurants include Mr. Maurice's Italian and the Mexican-Japanese Piopiko, and the Shinpuhkan courtyard below holds shops and a mini-theatre. It works as a design stop on a downtown walk even if you're not staying.
