About

Onjuku is known as the beach with "white sand and blue sea" on the Sotobo coast of Chiba, two hours from Tokyo. Its pale, fine sand is unusual for this part of Japan, and the water quality rating is top class (AA). The beach inspired the 1923 childrens song "Tsuki no Sabaku" (Desert under the Moon), commemorated by bronze camel statues on the sand and a small memorial museum nearby. In July and August the beach is lifeguarded with beach huts; in other seasons it is quiet and lovely for walks and surfing.
