About

Moriya Beach in Katsuura on Chibas outer coast is a 550 m crescent of sand between rocky headlands, chosen for the "100 best beaches of Japan" lists for its crystal-clear water. At low tide a rocky path appears linking the beach with Watashima, a small islet about 170 m offshore, and the rocks around it are full of tide pools and fish. In summer the beach has beach huts and lifeguards; it is strictly family-oriented with no BBQ, camping, marine sports or tattoo display. Combine with the Katsuura morning market, one of Japans three great morning markets.

Tips

Check the tide table to walk out toward Watashima at low tide.
The beach is only lifeguarded on certain days in season (recently mid-July to late August, with some days closed).
Kazusa-Okitsu Station (JR Sotobo Line) is a 10-minute walk.
BBQ, camping and tattoo display are banned.
