Kiyoken (Yokohama Station Main Store) 崎陽軒 本店
Yokohama's shumai maker, founded at Yokohama Station in 1908; its shumai bento is a rail-travel classic.
About
Kiyoken began in 1908 as a shop inside the first Yokohama Station, the site of today's Sakuragicho Station. Looking for a local speciality, it took inspiration from the dim sum of Yokohama's Chinatown and launched its pork-and-dried-scallop shumai in 1928, designed to taste good cold on a train. In 1954 came the Shiumai Bento, a boxed lunch that became one of Japan's best-known ekiben. Since 1955 each box of shumai has carried a little ceramic soy-sauce bottle called hyōchan, decorated with faces and now a collector's item. The company's main building near the station's east exit houses shops and restaurants, and its products are sold all over Yokohama.
