About

Founded in 1880 as a Tokyo branch of the Ise Grand Shrines so city dwellers could worship without the long pilgrimage, Tokyo Daijingu staged the first Shinto-style wedding in 1900, establishing the ceremony most Japanese couples still use. That heritage makes it Tokyo's go-to shrine for en-musubi (bonds of fate), and it draws a steady stream of young women buying pastel love charms and drawing love-fortune omikuji. The compact grounds are tucked between office buildings near Iidabashi, with a graceful worship hall in Ise style and a canopy of ginkgo that turns gold in late November. Weddings still take place here most weekends.
