About

Senzoku-ike (literally 'foot-washing pond') got its name from the legend that the monk Nichiren rested here and washed his feet on his final journey. Today it is one of the most loved neighbourhood parks in Ota: rowing and swan boats on the water, a red bridge to a Benzaiten shrine island, 1,000 cherry trees round the shore and, in the woods nearby, the graves of Katsu Kaishu and his wife, Katsu, who negotiated Edo's peaceful surrender in 1868, loved this place and had a villa here. On autumn evenings it is quiet enough to hear the herons.
