About

Opened in 2019 by UDS, the design-led operator behind several Tokyo boutique hotels, Onsen Ryokan Yuen Shinjuku brings ryokan style to a tower in the Shinjuku 5-chome backstreets, a few minutes from Shinjuku Gyoen. The design is restrained: a lattice-screened entrance and an inner courtyard garden, with timber, stone and paper lanterns in a calm minimalist palette. The 193 rooms run from compact doubles with tatami-style platforms to Onsen suites with their own baths. The highlight is the top-floor bath. Water is transported from a hot spring source in Hakone to fill an open-air rotenburo that looks out over the Shinjuku towers. There is also an indoor bath, and the bath stays open late into the night. The restaurant KAKA TOJO serves seasonal food from across Japan, cooked on an iron plate or as tempura, overlooking the inner garden. It is a good-value way to get the ryokan experience without leaving central Tokyo.
