Kagurazaka Backstreets 神楽坂の路地
Stone-paved lanes of former geisha houses, ryotei restaurants and French bistros climbing off Kagurazaka slope: Tokyo's most romantic evening stroll.
About
Kagurazaka was a top-class hanamachi (geisha district) and still has a few working geisha. The main slope is busy, but the magic is in the side alleys: Hyogo Yokocho, Kakurenbo Yokocho ('hide-and-seek alley') and Geisha Shinmichi, with black wooden fences, ishidatami cobbles and lanterns marking discreet ryotei. Thanks to the nearby French institute and school, it also has some of the best French bistros and bakeries in Tokyo. Akagi Shrine (redesigned by Kengo Kuma) and Zenkoku-ji temple are on the slope.
