About
Higashi Shirahige Park was designed as an evacuation zone for the old wooden neighbourhoods of north Sumida. Its east side is lined by the Shirahige-Higashi apartment towers, a continuous wall of buildings with fire shutters and water cannons meant to shield evacuees from fires. Inside are wide lawns, woods, cherry trees and a playground, and the west edge meets the Sumida River promenade. It is free and rarely crowded.
Highlights
- Unique apartment-block firewall stretching about a kilometre
- Wide lawns and cherry trees by the Sumida River
- Riverside promenade for walking and running
- Playground and open space with few tourists
Tips
- Walk south along the river to Mukojima Hyakkaen garden and Sumida Park.
- Most visitors are locals: a good place for a quiet hanami.
- Bring drinks; shops are on the streets behind the apartments.
