About

HAGISO started life as Hagi-so, a two-storey wooden rental block built in 1955 and later used as a share house by Tokyo University of the Arts students. When it was slated for demolition in 2011, the residents staged a farewell art show that drew so many visitors the owner changed course, and in 2013 it reopened as what its creators call the world's smallest cultural complex. The ground floor holds HAGI CAFE, with a big communal table, morning set breakfasts and seasonal lunches made with produce from around Japan, plus a white-cube gallery showing young artists. Upstairs is the reception for hanare, a hotel that treats Yanaka itself as the facilities, the bath is a local sento, the restaurant is the corner diner. Raw timber, original stairs and slightly wonky floors make it feel like a friend's house rather than a venue.
