About

The curved neo-Renaissance Wako building, completed in 1932 for the Hattori (Seiko) company, carries the clock tower that has become the symbol of Ginza, and its chimes still ring on the hour. The best vantage is from the diagonally opposite corners of the 4-chome crossing, by Ginza Place or Ginza Mitsukoshi, so that the tower, the crossing and the flagship stores are all in frame. On weekend afternoons Chuo-dori becomes a pedestrian paradise and you can shoot down the middle of the road. At night the clock face glows and the long-exposure light trails of taxis curve around the corner. Wako's seasonal window displays are worth a detail shot too.
