Ameya-Yokocho (Ameyoko) アメヤ横丁
A gritty, shouting 500m market street running under the JR tracks from Ueno to Okachimachi: fresh seafood, dried goods, cut fruit on sticks, discount sneakers and standing izakaya.
About
Ameyoko began as a post-war black market selling sweets (ame) and American goods, and still has that energy. Around 400 stalls line the street and the side alleys under the railway: fish mongers with crab and tuna, spice and dried-fruit sellers, fruit-on-a-stick vendors, cheap cosmetics, sportswear and military surplus. In the evening the yakitori and seafood stands spill onto the street with crates for chairs. End of December is the famous year-end rush when Tokyoites buy New Year's food.
