About

The odd name is a railway measurement: this stretch of viaduct sits 2 km 540 m from Tokyo Station. In 2010 JR turned the dim space beneath the Yamanote tracks into a clean, gallery-like arcade of around 50 small shops, most of them makers who design and produce on the premises. You can watch a leather craftsman stitching wallets, buy hand-blown glass, indigo-dyed goods, wooden spoons, enamel pins or Edo-kiriko-inspired jewellery, and order personalised pieces. Because it is in the gap between Akihabara's electronics and Ueno's Ameyoko it gets almost no tour traffic, and on a weekday you can have long chats with the makers. The adjoining CHABARA food market under the tracks toward Akihabara sells regional Japanese pantry goods.
