Tenjin-san Flea Market (Kitano) 北野天満宮 天神市
On the 25th of each month the approach and grounds of Kitano Tenmangu fill with hundreds of stalls selling antiques, old kimono, crafts and festival food. Smaller and more local than Toji's market.
About
Tenjin-ichi is held on the 25th, the monthly day of Sugawara no Michizane, the scholar enshrined at Kitano Tenmangu. Stalls line the stone approach from the main torii and wrap around the shrine buildings: antique dealers, secondhand clothing, pottery, dried goods and plenty of yakitori, okonomiyaki and amazake. It has a more neighbourhood feel than Kobo-ichi, and you can combine it with the plum garden (February-March) or autumn maple garden. 25 December (Shimai-Tenjin) and 25 January (Hatsu-Tenjin) are the biggest editions.
