About

Omiya was a soy-sauce merchant on Kawaramachi-dori that served the Tosa domain and quietly sheltered its men. On the cold night of 10 December 1867 (Keio 3, 11th month, 15th day), Sakamoto Ryoma and his ally Nakaoka Shintaro were talking upstairs when swordsmen forced their way in. Ryoma died that night; Nakaoka died two days later. The killers were never settled for certain; the shogunate's Mimawarigumi patrol is the most widely accepted theory. A month later the shogun's restoration of power to the emperor was followed by war. Today there is nothing left of the house, only a stone reading 'site where Sakamoto Ryoma and Nakaoka Shintaro met disaster' on the pavement of a shopping street.
