Nanzenji Junsei 南禅寺 順正
Yudofu (simmered tofu) in a garden estate at the gates of Nanzenji, where the dish was born as temple food. A Kyoto rite of passage, especially when the maples turn.
About
Junsei occupies the grounds of a former Edo-period medical school next to Nanzenji, with several dining pavilions set around a large landscaped garden. The signature is the yudofu course: silky tofu warmed in kelp broth at the table, eaten with soy-based dipping sauce and condiments, alongside yuba, tofu dengaku and seasonal side dishes. Kaiseki courses are also available. It is large and well set up for visitors, with English menus and set prices, and makes a natural lunch stop on a Nanzenji, Philosopher's Path or Eikando walk.
