About

Jonangu was founded to protect the southern approach to the Heian capital and is visited for blessings for safe travel and house moves. Its paid garden, the Rakusuien, is laid out in Heian, Muromachi and Momoyama styles and planted with over a hundred species mentioned in the Tale of Genji. The weeping plums in late winter draw the biggest crowds. Poetry gatherings in Heian dress are held in the garden in spring and autumn.
