About

Yotsutsuji, meaning four-way crossroads, is the junction where the torii-lined path from the main shrine meets the loop around the summit of Mt. Inari. Before you, a terrace opens onto a wide view of southern and central Kyoto, from the Kyoto Station area to the western mountains; at sunset the city glows orange. Most visitors turn back here, so beyond this point the torii tunnels become quiet. Teahouses such as Nishimura-tei serve kitsune udon and inari-zushi, and the area has small sub-shrines and fox statues. Photographers come at dusk for the city lights and at dawn for empty torii shots on the way up.
