About
Funaokayama is a low hill that has looked out over Kyoto since the city was laid out, and it was a battlefield during the Onin War. Today it is a wooded park with paths to the summit, where a clearing gives views across the city to the Higashiyama hills and Daimonji. Kenkun Shrine, dedicated to Oda Nobunaga, sits on its eastern slope. It is a great stop in combination with Daitokuji temple and the Funaoka Onsen bathhouse nearby.
Highlights
- Summit lookout over the city and Daimonji
- Kenkun Shrine dedicated to Oda Nobunaga
- Short forest walks
- Close to Daitokuji and old Nishijin streets
Tips
- Visit on the evening of 16 August to see the Gozan Okuribi fires from the summit, but expect crowds.
- Combine with Daitokuji temple and a soak at Funaoka Onsen.
