About

The land beneath Aman Kyoto was gathered over decades by a textile collector who planned to build a museum for his obi collection here; he laid stone paths, staircases and walls through the forest, but the museum was never built and the garden slipped into moss. Aman opened its hotel here in November 2019, with pavilions by Kerry Hill Architects (the firm's last major Japanese project after Hill's death in 2018) set among the old stonework, cedars and maples. The architecture is quiet: long low roofs, Japanese cypress, black stone and full-height glass looking into green. Rooms and guest villas are spread through the forest, and the spa uses natural hot spring water. Non-guests can book lunch or dinner at The Living Pavilion, the glass-walled restaurant facing the lawn, which is the best way to see the place.
