Shrine · Narita Airport (Toho)
Toho Shrine 東峰神社
A tiny village shrine that survives in a pocket of woods inside Narita Airport's fences, beside the approach to Runway B, where jets pass close by. A quiet symbol of the airport's contested history.
About
Toho Shrine belonged to the farming hamlet of Toho, much of which was absorbed by the airport. Local residents refused to give up the shrine, and its grove remained in place near the south end of Runway B, which is why the runway's layout and approach had to work around it. Today the small wooden shrine is reached through a fenced lane and is still tended by locals. Planes pass close by on approach or departure depending on the wind, so plane spotters come too, but please remember it is an active shrine with a sensitive history: be quiet and respectful.
