About

Sanbanze is one of the last surviving natural tidal flats at the head of Tokyo Bay, and this park in Funabashi gives easy access to it. In spring and early summer families come at low tide for shiohigari, digging for asari clams in the mud flats (paid, season and tide dates published by the park). The rest of the year it is a quiet place for birdwatching, with plovers and dunlins feeding on the flats, and for sunsets: on clear days, especially in winter, Mount Fuji stands over the water to the west, sometimes with the sun setting directly behind it ("Diamond Fuji") around mid-February and late October. A small environmental learning centre explains the ecology of the flats. Swimming is not allowed.
